The film doesn't captuyre the raw energy of the stage version. but for a true fan of the gorgeous musical, this is a Must. fans of the genere may be put off by the long gap in between songs in the middle but the songs are as catchy on the 100th view...ing as athe are on the 1st. The readdition of "Cool Conservative Men" is a welcome addition that was lacking in the VHS version, since it was this song that true gave 1776 balance. Read more Less

I owe my deep interest in John Adams to this glorious show and movie. I never realized what a driving force he was and what a wonderful relationship he and Abigail had.It has all been validated in David McCullough's equally wonderful book.My favorite... musical of all! Read more Less

One of the best musicals of our time. One that teaches American History in the most unusual way. With wit, humour, laughter and deep understanding of the American experience. Even touches on a very sensitive issue, slavery. I've watched this m...ovie many times. Learned something new everytime I've viewed it. It's for the young and young at heart. Never talks down to the audience. The audience feels like their apart of American History in the making. The cast, director, scenery, costumes, music, history all make this a very memorable experience. A movie that everyone can enjoy learning from and sing along with. 3 cheers for 1776. Read more Less

A way underrated musical. The cast is perfect and the songs are fantastic. Really one of the best movies you've probably never seen. Highly recommended.

Founding Fathers fabulously funny!

This is a great comical treatment of the American revolution from the point of view of the original colonial representatives to the Continental Congress. You would never think folks like John Adams, Ben Franklin and Thomas Jefferson could be so dogg...one funny! The songs are great, the parts are well-acted, and the script is brimming with historical accuracies such that even students of American History will learn something.I would recommend this film be shown in every high school in America.
