    The 40D a GREAT camera

By Douglas  Jan 21, 2008 | 26 out of 26 found this Canon EOS 40D review helpful

Pros: Quality shots, features, and engineering

Cons: None that I am aware of

Going from the rebel XT to the 40D is a Dream ! The controls are perfectly placed . After set-up you don't have to look away from the viewfinder, everything is easily accessible . The focusing is easier , the images are sharper, the camera is e...asier to use, the battery lasts longer, and it is an overall sweet camera for less than $1500. This camera has pro features without the pro cost. I stand 100% behind this wonderful camera and would suggest that this is the new camera you have been shopping around for . Read more Less

Pros: high-speed shutter, sensor cleaning, compatibility w/EOS accessories

Cons: price but wot the heck

I was a former Nikon-man till my brother told me about the Canon-series cameras. I tried once back in the early 90s and haven't looked back. This is my fifth digital camera, my first being the DCS520 (still available for purchase). What can I say... about this that you haven't heard from others? I like the feel of it, very comfortable and easy to use. The controls are a bit strangely placed, but it just takes a little getting used to, as in any new equipment. I adore the heavy weight, as - IMHO - it adds to the stability of the control and balance of a good camera; you just cannot handhold a tiny/thin P&S too well. I especially LOVE the high-speed shutter and it's also sooo quiet! I wish I had this camera months ago while shooting a ballet performance!! This is a quality camera that was well thought-out and am pleased with the results! Read more Less

Pros: Greta Value for Money - A Real Semi-Pro

Cons: Lower buttons on rear may be activated when carried round neck.

OK dealing with the negatives first - There are so few, but if the camera is on and I'm carrying it on th eneck strap there is a tendency to operate the buttoms on the rear bottom. Not a major issue, but sometimes annoying. Having got that out of... the way - this is an awesome camera in its price range. As with most cameras, you really do need to invest in a good lens but with my limited budget, I have still been getting way above average photos compared with previous cameras. Like computers, you need to future proof yourself as far as you can afford and this is a great choice if this is your budget. Read more Less

    Great camera

By Raymon  Dec 7, 2007 | 10 out of 11 found this Canon EOS 40D review helpful

Pros: Well build, great pictures, great price

Cons: None that I know of.

I upgraded from the Canon Digital Rebel XT. The 40d is just a great camera it has a good solid feel, the controls are easy to figure out and well placed, the shutter speed is fantasic fast at 6.5 fps, battery life is darn good at about 1000 shots or ...so. I just cant say enough about this camera! I will and have recommended this camera to anyone that wants a good professional level camera. Read more Less

No Need To Upgrade To 50D

By Sam  Feb 24, 2009 | 8 out of 8 found this Canon EOS 40D review helpful

Pros: Excellent low ISO quality. Machine gun rapid fire shooting. Fast auto focus and auto tracking. Ergonomically comfortable in my hands. Sturdy and weatherproof. Free sensor cleaning FOR LIFE from the Irvine, CA Canon facility.

Cons: Combined with the 28-135 lens and Speedlite 430 ED II, it can be quite heavy.

Before I bought the 40D, I researched the hell out of it. After reading all the reviews and comments, I bought it and wasn't disappointed...until three months later when Canon announced the 50D. Naturally I was pissed that the latest and greatest... semi-pro camera became obsolete so quickly. But as time went on, it turns out the 50D ranks lower in image quality than the 40D. Seems Canon is caught up in the megapixel race and needed something to compete with Nikon's 300D. So they basically took the 40D and jammed 5 extra megapixels on the sensor. But in typical business operating fashion, the "marketing" department called the shots on this one, not the "engineers" who build the damn thing. As a result, those extra megapixels create poor image quality with the 50D. So for less money, you can get superior image quality, especially with high ISO images, with the 40D. That's also probably why the 40D is still on the market. Why get rid of a good thing? Read more Less

    Canon's Done It Again

    By Mad4MyWesties  Feb 29, 2008 | 8 out of 8 found this Canon EOS 40D review helpful

Pros: Live View Setting, No Shutter Shake, lightweight, auto sensor cleaning, sturdy body

    Cons: None yet

I'm getting to know my new camera and have fallen in love with it. I'm a veteran Canon digital user, and have the Rebel XTI, 30D, and guess what? I want the 5D next. I can only imagine what it would be like, because this one is PHENOMENOL and... it's hard to get me to say that. I love the fact that there's virtally no camera shake! In low light, sometimes things are a bit blurry, but that's not from shaking. I've gotten so many shots with this camera that I wouldn't have gotten at all, let alone as good, with another. Two thumbs up, Canon. You have outdone yourself this time. Read more Less

    Simply a Dream.

    Pros: Image quality/
speed...obviously. Study feel. Important one for me coming from the Rebel.

Cons: If you don't know how to use a DSLR, don't get this camera.

I recently upgraded from the Canon EOS Rebel XT and by god is there a huge difference...literally. The Rebel feels so small and puny in my hands now, which by many factors is not a good thing considering the 40D is not much heavier. I have only tak...en a few pictures so far, but already I feel like this camera will accelerate my already growing photography skills! I bought it used for $825...so I can't comment on the price...It was too good of deal for me to pass up and wait for the 50D...5 MP, same body design...better screen...ehhh not worth 500-600 more. If you can find a good deal on this camera go for it! You will not be disappointing! Read more Less
