Paper Mario : The Thousand-Year Door

    By VjSaoNuOcMatEm  May 22, 2009

Pros: I like Mario 2 I wish they would have left out the classic and put Mario 3 or even mario 1. Classic is very boring. I don't understand who would like that.

Cons: If you want to have fun, just buy this game and play!

With Two games to play and multi player up to four people I think this game is a good game to start out with. With Graphics as good as a super nintendo in a game half the size as a game boy color game I think the super mario advance is a awsome choice...... for new comers. The controls are also very easy to use. That's all I have to say about this game. Read more Less

    Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door

    Pros: Graphics

    Cons: Controls

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door is great. When I first heard this game was comming out I bought it A.S.A.P. I played it for hours a night and I have beaten it lots of time but it still gets better. The graphics are sweet. The sound is good, but t...he same song over and over gets to a person after awhile. The controls are hard at first but once you get the hang of it you can do it all in your sleep. The bosses are kind of cool and get harder each level and the RPG style leveling is a plus. I give it a 10 out of 10. Read more Less

Paper Mario the Thousand Year Door

    By nate  Jun 24, 2006

Pros: Fantastic, simple gameplay; great sense of humor; big quest

Cons: Very similar to the first game

The Princess is in Another Castle The Princess has been kidnapped, but not by the usual suspects. Mario pursues, of course, and Princess Peach’s trail leads Mario to Rogueport, a criminal’s haven coincidentally built atop ancient ruins. Within the... ruins is the mysterious thousand-year door, which can be opened only with the power of seven crystal stars. It would seem that the princess’s captors, the extraterrestrial X-Nauts, need whatever is hidden behind the door, and thus Mario must collect the seven stars before they do if the day is to be saved. The story is actually riddled with many clichés itself, but developer Intelligent Systems’ tongue remains firmly in cheek and usually calls them out right after presenting them. The player will also get to take comedic interludes with the Princess and Bowser, which are always amusing, and just another example of the game’s pervading sense of humor. While not as downright zany as Mario and Luigi, Paper Mario is indeed quite a funny game, thanks in large part to one of the best RPG translations ever. It’s never out-and-out hilarious, but always clever, charming, and just absurd enough to get a laugh. More Than a Visual Gimmick The first Paper Mario was just an RPG with a unique cut-out style, but Intelligent Systems has taken the whole paper theme to a new level. The environments unfold like a giant pop-up book, and a number of other paper-y sight gags are used regularly to reveal hidden objects. Of course, Mario himself is made of paper. After receiving curses from demon-filled chests throughout the game, the portly plumber can fold, twist, and turn himself in a number of ways to progress through the game. Sure, it’s a little gimmicky, but it feels natural and you’ll always feel like you did something cool when you reach a new area or solve a puzzle. In addition to Mario’s own jumping, smacking, and transforming abilities, he has seven uniquely "Mario" allies with abilities of their own. Paper Cutting Of course, since Paper Mario is an RPG, they didn't forget the battles. When Mario touches an enemy in the overworld, he’ll be whisked to a stage, replete with a cheering audience and falling scenery. As before, Mario can jump or use his trusty hammer to attack enemies, which are clearly delineated into various types to incentivize certain attacks over others. For example, jumping on a spiked enemy will hurt Mario, so he’ll have to use his hammer to dispatch that foe. Each attack is a different sort of timing-based minigame, and performing well will not only garner extra damage, but applause from the audience as well. As Mario advances through the story and collects crystal stars, he’ll gain new star powers. Taking an old cliche to new extremes, these powers are fueled by how much the audience likes Mario's performance, meaning style is as important as his battling substance. When Mario levels up he can choose to upgrade his hit points, his flower points for magic, or badge points. Badges are very much like upgrade items in other RPGs. There are a lot of cool abilities here for Mario and friends, including some especially powerful ones that trump the game’s otherwise stringent rules. Pop-Up World While the whole paper thing has been given gameplay applications, it also just looks cool. Environments are simply modeled and vibrantly colored, while the crisp, high-resolution characters and enemies move over them with silky smooth animation. At times, it can look like a jazzed-up Flash animation from the Internet. The result is a game that has a minimalist artistic flair and is always visually engaging. The music is equally solid, with a bloopy homage that fits into the series’ musical milieu nicely. Read more Less

Pros: Bigger levels, crowds, more abilities, longer

    Cons: None.

This version is way better. Mario can now shape-shift, and if you like long games, this is a need-to-buy. You do not even need to be an RPG lover to love this game.
