    Essential Kurosawa

    By john  Jan 25, 2006

Pros: Deep character development, great cinematography

Cons: Language in Japanese( no English dubbing )

For those who have seen this movie and The Magnificent Seven, they will notice the close similarity between the storylines. In fact, the latter is a westernization of the former. The first half of the movie is spent in character development, starting... with the villagers to the seven samurai they hired to defend their village against a band of brigands. The black & white photography is not a drawback but actually adds to the movie. It makes many of the scenes more memorable. For some, this movie may be too long. But for those who have stayed the course, they are rewarded with the climatic battle towards the end. A masterpiece in movie-making for sure. For movie goers who like good storyline, acting, directing, and photography, this is it. Read more Less

    A great movie

    By John  May 16, 2003

This is one of the best action pictures ever made. Very few movies have both a story and characters as captivating as
    Seven Samurai.

    The standard for all others

    By mike t  Oct 20, 2000

Extraordinary direction, merciless social critique, slapstick comedy, and the best action sequences ever made in film to this day. A limited budget B&W movie with no explosions, helicopters or special effects, yet keeps the the viewer is captivated ...from start to finish. A timeless classic, definitely in my top three of any category. Read more Less

You can't find a better film.

    By Lawrance  May 23, 2000

I was lucky that the first time I saw this movie it was on a big screen. Colleges used to do that a lot in the olden days. In London they show the climatic battle sequence on a big screen at the Museum of the Moving Image. Why? Because there is a br...eadth and depth to this film that is rarely seen in cinema. I dare you to find a better examination of the notion of "heroism." RASHOMON is a better introduction to Kurosawa, but this is his masterpiece. Read more Less

    An Unequaled Masterpiece

    By Patrick  Feb 19, 2000

The film is an epic classic. Kurosawa's genius will never be equaled, but will often be imitated. I couldn't keep my eyes off of the screen from start to finish. This is a Must See.

    Classics

    By Alyor  Feb 2, 2000

This movie is a masterpiece of all the movies. Only Kurosawa can use a simple plot & use wonderful actors. There is also a sence of humor. Do recommend to watch this one.

    This film is terrific

    By Joshua  Nov 29, 1999

While you must read the words in subtitles, the imagery, action, and emotions of this movie are beyond language. The plot contains ample humor and action, but is also thought provoking on many levels. I would suggest it for anyone, even those who ty...pically shy away from foriegn films or old Black and White movies. Its a very entertaining piece and worthwhile for almost any audience.
