    Sorry, George, Not This Time

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Dec 12, 2000 | 81 out of 149 found this Star Wars Trilogy (2004) review helpful

An open letter to George Lucas:Dear Mr. Lucas,I now own three copies of the Star Wars Trilogy: the original ltd. ed. letterbox version (at over $100); the THX letterbox version; and the Special Ed. letterbox version. In addition, I bought the Episod...e I VHS, despite the fact that I don't buy any other VHS titles anymore, having switched to DVD.You now offer up yet another rendition of the same material, only this time with 10 measly minutes of Episode II material, material you very well know will be the type of stuff your loyal consumers, like me, will want. The people who have bought over and over again are the ones to whom this is aimed, obviously, because single-time buyers couldn't care less about the 10 minutes of Episode II crap.Well, enough is enough. Money is no object, but my pride is, and you risk alienating those who are most interested in what you have to offer. From some of the posts, it appears that it's too late already.Someone who has bought your product three times over shouldn't have to pay again for 10 minutes of new stuff. And for being the biggest proponent of digital moviemaking, the fact that the Star Wars titles are unavailable on DVD ranks right up there with Hollywood's biggest hypocrisies.Quit milking and alienating your most loyal and ardent supporters.Tom GaylordChicago, IL Read more Less

    Pros: star wars story rocks

    Cons: not the original

the good thing about the original star wars trilogy is it's originality and technological ingenuity. it's nice to see someone try to improve on an old work but we should be able to see the films in their true form, with cut outs and puppets.... instead we are stuck seeing a film of the passed with new digital crap that doesn't belong at all. there is no way that lucas could have the same vision as he had twenty years earlier. the "improvements" in the new edition add nothing to the story or the characters, they are simply sugar coating. cute crap that make children giggle for a second instead of having a chance to notice that great films can be made without digital effects and blue screen sets. Pros: Finally!

    Cons: Finally!

All,Being a true die-hard movie fanatic and DVD collector, I am worried that we will have so many versions of this movie in the near future that we won't know which is which anymore. I have to say that I am glad that Mr. Lucas finally found the t...ime to present these great works of art in DVD format. I know I am not speaking alone when I say...WE WANT THIS MOVIE IN IT'S ORIGINAL FORMAT AND ON DVD. I have put together a list of versions that I predict will be "released" now that Mr. Luas has the time:1. Trilogy Box Sex in Letterbox format ($45 - $50) - 5.1 sound included of course but 6.1 if we're lucky. 9/042. Trilogy Box Set in Widescreen format ($45 - $50) - 5.1 9/043. Enhanced Trilogy DVD Box Set - Widescreen (Price Unknown) Behind the scenes, commentary, deleted scenes, etc.4. Enhanced Trilogy DVD Box Set - Full Screen - Release Date of Movie - 5/05 DVD to follow. Same as above5. Episode III Revenge of the Sith - Wide Screen - Release date of movie 5/05 and DVD to follow.6. Episode III Revenge of the Sith - Full Screen7. I also believe there will be a separate box set of the final 3 upon completion date of final episode.8. Last but not least...a complete set of Star Wars. Release date obviously unknown. So now you see where I am going with this. I have no problem with the studios and Mr. Lucas getting as much money in their pockets as they can, but for the sake of myself and the other people who braved (slept on sidewalks) in front of theatres all over this country to see the Episode 1, I ask that Mr. Lucas listen to me and hopefully many others and simply put the original versions on DVD format. I have the utmost respect for computer technology but it would be a disservice to his orignal team to not do this. My suggestion is that they make the enhanced version DVD to give me and you the option to watch either version on DVD, (Think Terminator 2 Special Edition) without forcing his loyal fans to spend even more money for versions upon versions of these movies that will last a lifetime simply because as you can see...there are going to be so many! Thanks for reading and I'll see you in line on opening day! Read more Less

Pros: awesome restoration crisp n clear pictures

Cons: didn't offer original theather movie on DVD or add it to the DVDS

If you loved it as a kid or adult you will love it even more on DVD. The restoration on DVD is so much better than VHS could ever be this is some to cherish for all the DIEHARD Star Wars fans like myself. Just watch and think this was madeover 20 yrs... ago and is still better than a majority of the crap Hollywood puts out now. Read more Less

Pros: Finally on DVD! The extra features (making of especially!)

Cons: Could have done without some of the extra scenes.

At first I wasn't too pleased that Lucas included all those new scenes from the rerelease but after some reflection, I decided that it wasn't the worst thing in the world. This is after all, what Lucas would have done with the film if he had... the time and money and technology years ago. I could hae done without the extra "musical" number at Jabba's or Hayden Christiansen's cameo at the end of ROTJ. After I bought the DVDs, I went home and turned off all the lights and had a little Star Wars marathon. Great sound, excellent film quality and seeing it like that brought back memories from long ago. I'm sorry that some of the hardcore fans didn't like the extra scenes and feel the need to verbally abuse Lucas but I think that after all these years watching Star Wars on tape, this DVD was well worth my money.Make sure you watch the 2 and a half hour documentary on disc 4! A vast improvement over the original 3 with added scenes/really crisp dialogue/punched up sound effects/better cut scenes/new camera angles etc. I would NEVER trade this set for the originals. Not a chance. Mr. Lucas came through on this one(except t...hat musical number in Jabba's Palace-ARGH). I forgive you. This set ROCKS! Read more Less

Pros: Sound and picture quality ROCK

    Cons: Extras SUCK

Rather than be redundant with the criticism that these are the "special" editions and not the originals that we all really want, I'll focus on the "extras." While the old trailers are a riot, especially the teaser for ESB tha...t just shows close-ups of McQuarrie paintings, the extras are sorely lacking. There's not even one friggin' deleted scene! How long have we all been waiting for the Biggs scene and Luke goes to Tocci Station scene in ANH, and even the sandstorm scene in ROTJ?But here's what sums Lucas up in a nutshell: I don't know if anyone caught this, but he actually took the time to re-edit the voiceover on the Special Edition trailer in several different spots. Let that sink in for a sec - he re-did a VOICEOVER in a stupid TRAILER!!! Why???? If you have the Special Edition on VHS, watch the trailer at the beginning of ANH and it's the exact one that played in theaters (yes, I do honestly remember it). Then watch the one on the DVD and you'll see what I mean. It's too bad we're all so addicted to Star Wars, b/c Lucas is almost a self-parody at this point. Read more Less

    George:
I can forgive the CGI ruining Phantom Menace and I can forgive Rick McCallum being pompous, but please, George, give us the trilogy on DVD. And throw in the cut scenes as bonus material! VHS is going extinct... give us DVD!! Please!

    Pros: Finally on DVD

Cons: Only the Special edition version

I was realy hoping that we would have the original version and the Special Edition on the DVD's. I too am a bit turned off by some of the " improvements" in the special edition. I know he wanted to finish the movies, but can we do wi...thout the new material for nostalgia's sake? Ah for that summer night in 78 at the drive-in watching the ships fly rightout of the night sky . . . . Read more Less

    What's This!!!

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Sep 23, 2004 | 4 out of 7 found this Star Wars Trilogy (2004) review helpful

    Pros: Finally on DVD

Cons: NO CHOICE ON WHICH VERSION TO BUY!!!

I thought the reason for making a movie was to give the audience what they want to see, not just what the director wants. Granted, it's nice having the Trilogy on DVD in widescreen, and 5.1 surround sound, but why not release the ORIGINAL "...THEATRICAL" VERSION? The 1970's through 1980's theatrical release was just fine, and the 1997 Special Edition was great. However, the "Enhanced" Special Edition was not very good. First, the video/audio quality, not as good as the 1977 cut of the first film.(i.e. Darth Vader's lightsaber blade being PINK not red in ROTJ) Second, the changes in dialogue and the replacement of actors was not kosher. It's insulting to the original actors to replace their performances, which they worked hard on, just because Lucas wanted "consistancy."(
i.e. replacing Bobba Fett's voice, replacing Sabastian Shaw with Hayden Christensen, ect.) The only thing worth buying this box set for is to watch the Bonus Disc, great stuff there.Final word, Lucas must give us a choice!
