Colombian alternative/metal band Ultrágeno made its live debut in May of 1996 under the name of La Sopita. In 1997, the group performed at Bogota's Rock Al Parque, playing along with A.N.I.M.A.L., Chilean funk-rock band Chancho en Piedra, and Control Machete, among others. That same year, Ultrágeno signed up to independent label Hormiga Loca, recording the act's debut album in 1998, which was produced by Julián Silva. A year later, Ultrágeno participated in a tribute to Argentinean Soda Stereo called Tributo Bizarro a Soda Stereo: Gracias Totales, featuring "Nuestra Fe." Ultrágeno's self-titled record was voted Best Independent Album by Shock magazine.
