Amsterdam's Xymox began as the Clan of Xymox, playing gloomy, Gothic music. Their name comes from the word "zymotic," meaning "of fermentation." They shortened their name to Xymox and took a new direction in 1989, playing more upbeat, commercially-oriented pop. The group, which included Ronny Moerings, Pieter Nooten, Frank Weyzig, and Anke Wolbert, has been criticized as lacking much distinction from its peers.
